These local media companies demonstrate that they can remain competitive in a market where industry titans like Netflix aim to draw in as many people as possible.

IKATV, a Mali-based startup that has established an OTT distribution platform in recent weeks, is one of those local carriers. Available on all screens and connected devices, Internet television is being revolutionised in the hottest deep African regions. Since its inception in the summer, the project has been steadily developing.

We had 25 licensed local channels available for streaming, and we wanted to make them work and be renowned by the audience in other countries where our people travel or work,” explains Koureissi KONARE, director of IKATV. The OTT service would increase the worldwide integration of African life and culture and enable people to stay in touch with Africa wherever they are.

“Despite our experience of deployment in numerous countries, we were particularly impressed with the development speed of this local African company,” says Nick Pesegov, CEO of Telebreeze, the company that provides the technical solution. Within a month, we all worked together to develop the platform and launch the service. Not all well-known businesses might take pride in this speed. This demonstrates how local engineers and business owners are becoming more professional. Additionally, IKATV might create a virtual operator model and quickly expand the service, providing other African business owners with favourable start-up prospects.
